Creatine vs Whey Protein: Which Should You Take First?

This might be the most asked question in every Indian gym: "Should I take creatine or protein?"

The answer: They are not competing. They do completely different things. Asking "creatine or protein" is like asking "should I sleep or should I eat?" You need both, but for different reasons.

What Protein Does: Repairs and builds muscle tissue. After you tear muscle fibres during a workout, protein provides the raw material (amino acids) to rebuild them stronger. It is the building block.

What Creatine Does: Gives your muscles more energy during the workout itself. By increasing your ATP reserves, creatine lets you push harder more reps, heavier weight, better performance. It is the fuel.

If You Had to Pick One First: If you are eating a diet with adequate protein (1.6-2.2g per kg of bodyweight from food), start with creatine since your protein needs are already met. If your diet is low in protein (common in Indian vegetarian diets), start with whey protein to hit your daily protein target first.

Most serious gym-goers eventually take both  and they work even better together. Creatine helps you train harder, protein helps you recover from that harder training, and the combined effect is greater than either alone.
